Like no other philosopher, Karl Theodor Jaspers (1883-1969) has taken seriously the finitude of human existence and knowledge, and he has significantly reintroduced the notion of transcendence into philosophy and religion. He was an ardent advocate for freedom. Jaspers rejects revealed religion and revealed faith. A particular history or the historicity of a particular tradition or religion, claiming to supersede another tradition or religion, is always in danger of losing its authenticity.
