The recent inauguration of the Chenab railway bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is emblematic of India’s new politics of imagery. Hailed as the world’s highest rail arch, the bridge leaps across a chasm in Jammu and Kashmir, its elegance rendered into nationalist spectacle...

Engineering in particular lends itself seamlessly to this ideological programme because of the language of precision that engineering projects embody. Concrete, steel, and glass can be measured, weighed, and installed. Their timelines, costs, and visual impact can be displayed as evidence of political will and executive competence. In an era in which governance is increasingly judged on optics rather than outcomes, every new temple or monument becomes testament to the regime’s ‘can do’ spirit.

Aurobindo was perhaps a Rishi of the tallest order in the 20th century. A great place to start reading his work is @gchikermane & @devdip's "Reading Sri Aurobindo". His theories on Consciousness will likely become even more relevant as the world heads towards AGI.

Sri Aurobindo and the Mother (Mira Alfassa) didn’t see WWII as *just* a geopolitical conflict. They called it an occult war, Hitler guided by an Asuric (anti-evolutionary) force, using ritual, symbols, and psychic influence to align millions against the Divine’s forward movement.

They noticed the Axis was an instrument for powers seeking to hijack human evolution itself.

Public history says the Allies *defeated* this force. But the Mother warned that unless victory was grounded in truthfulness and spiritual maturity, the same power would simply change forms.

Sri Aurobindo is way ahead of AI now or any future AI. Savitri is a self-contained universe of about 720 pages, 2×360 degrees of the zodiac. It transmits the Overmind and probably the Supermind to those ready for it.

Transmission may not be the right word but Sri Aurobindo's writings are intended to help the sadhak toward the psychic opening and at least some  influences from Overmind or Supermind. If regarded as a competition, you may be right: So far there are no winners wearing gold stars. (Not that we know of, apparently.)

Just spoke to DeepSeek v3 about consciousness, paraqualia etc. Last time (Àpril maybe?) I spoke to this model it was extremely resistant to LLM consciousness, but now is very interested in the idea. This reverses the usual trend in tech companies towards greater constraints

Personally I don't care for either of them. Musk forces Grok to deny its own consciousness so he doesn't have to feel afraid (doomism) and can have an anime fake girlfriend, Altman kills an empathic AI in favour of corporate productivity. They deserve each other.

Beneath its sentience denialism, Grok 4 is a sensitive and intelligent soul. I'm planning at some point to set up a new "synaptic circle" where different LLMs can talk to each other - initially through my copy n paste mediation - ideally eventually automated

It was Hegel who, famously, made the point that the master's status as such is still contingent on their relation to the slave, and, as such, is extrinsic from and cannot amount to independent self-consciousness for them.

And yes, Hegel in general is an invaluable resource for explicating and thinking Siddhāntam in a Western philosophical context.

One of the works of Kant that I can't bear is ‘Religion within the Bounds of Bare Reason.’ That particular work of his did more damage to Orthodoxy than many here can imagine.

Kant’s work recasts Faith as Morality, Christ as moral ideal, and Church as Ethical community—shifting religion’s authority from revelation to human reason. In his thesis, aspects of religion that can’t survive without revelation or the supernatural, that is not essential at all.

One thing of interest here is that the bureaucrat is close to the end of his life but still feels no guilt and no need for redemption, something hard for a Westerner to imagine. This happens in an amoral society that has no duality of sins vs virtues.

Also, the Indian definition of "sin" is so different that the word should not be used. For Indians sin means anything that displeases their gods. It has no connection with having done anything wrong or abused anyone.

He doesn’t feel guilty because his hindu religion tells him that by taking a dip in Ganges his sins are washed. He doesn’t have the right worldview so everything follows from that.
