I’ve seen many posts about “bad writing” recently, so I just want to say it’s not just purple prose or what I call “MFA writing” that thuds; simple, unadorned “clear” writing can be dull as dishwater, especially since it’s so prevalent. Good writing, I think, has variety.
I’m also wondering if it’s a cultural thing as I read more British writers who are master stylists. American writers tend to stick to the bare bones sentences: short, declarative, no dependent clauses, no adjectives. It gets stultifying.
