Heritability of IQ is much lower than that of height

 Collated by Tusar Nath Mohapatra

"He thought of the writer Aldous Huxley’s description of an ideal totalitarian state, a condition he thought applied to Indians: they were inside a prison whose walls they could not see." - from a riveting excerpt  of @rahulabhatia 's new book. Out now!

Dawn Fire, Auroville - 152nd birthday celebration of Sri Aurobindo

A symbolic rekindling of the flame of aspiration carried by the Charter that was placed inside the Urn along with the earth from around the world.  It's like reinvoking that call for humanity and its future.

Oh that's true, I think it's a very radical idea, without any precedent to it. I don't think it will happen anytime soon because it challenges so many norms. The theoretical advantage is very obvious imo. Sri Aurobindo's Integral Yoga is a tremendous possibility. Whether or not it actually succeeds is irrelevant to me. What matters more to me is that serious efforts are put into the cause because the possibility is unbelievably good in my eyes.

Last week The Atlantic featured an article on the rising popularity of race/IQ science on the right (theatlantic.com/technology/arc…). The obvious point that "intelligence is not like height" sparked an unusual amount of whinging. I wrote about how this is now more true than ever. The specific claim in the article was that genetic variants for intelligence "predict only a small fraction of someone’s IQ score", unlike for height. This is true today and it will remain true, because the heritability of IQ is much lower than that of height. Full post here:

Great thread. In a similar vein, I'm gonna take this opportunity to take this hot, controversial & incredibly politicised topic to make a couple of points about measurement theory (which usually makes people go to sleep). 1/

IQ OTOH, is measured by a range of abstract reasoning tests (verbal, spatial, maths, memory etc). The idea is to avoid measuring education or learning, but it's a pretty abstract category, and the tests are rather unnatural and artificial. Face validity? Kinda sorta maybe.

Although we do not know exactly how creativity works, we do know that it is itself an evolutionary process within individual brains. For it depends on conjecture (which is variation) and criticism (for the purpose of selecting ideas). So, somewhere inside brains, blind variations and selections are adding up to creative thought at a higher level of emergence.

We will never know exactly how creativity works, but we can at least know that it is active in the cosmos and not the figment of individual human brains. Individual brains are its creation.

Everything in our environment here on Earth is structured by evolution and selection - we should not take as granted the universe can spontaneously do things we see everyday, from making complex objects in high abundance to performing computation - all evidence points to those things emerging via selection and time generating information and by no other mechanism

The future of science education in India looks promising with Government hell bent on creating witches, warlocks, occultists, sorcerers and soothsayers out of students who clear science-based entrance exams. Get your children out of this global pseudoscience capital.

I seriously don't know how to respond to unintelligent, scientifically illiterate humanoid lifeforms like you in a rational way so as to get you out of your frog-in-the-well situation. I seriously feel helpless when I am exposed to wastage of oxygen on planet earth lifeforms like you and I feel disappointed. To stick to curing livers or additionally keep trying to educate the many health illiterates like you is my choice and I do not require unsolicited advice from science illiterates like you. Ok?

Calm down, don't get triggered when someone shows you the mirror. You asked me to read "spiritual texts" when I was speaking from a scientific perspective. Maybe I'll try to have a rational conversation with you in your next life when you are reborn without chakras around and inside you, but flesh and bones and an actual brain. All the best and good luck. End of conversation. On mute.

The Cartesian Crisis describes the inability to be sure of anything—scientific claims, the basic facts of historical events, the degree to which a consensus is actually accepted by others. It leads to the collapse of reason itself. But it’s difficult to illustrate with examples because in each case, people immediately get lost in making the case for their best guess at what’s true.

Try spending one day resisting conclusions, and concentrating on the quality and consistency of the evidence. Our average level of certainty may be unchanged, but our reason for certainty is at an all time low. If you did this exercise once a month you’d soon know how rapidly the Cartesian Crisis is deepening.

It’s vital that we each halt our descent into this tsunami of uncertainty. Establish an unbreakable bond with someone you have good reason to trust, and discuss your beliefs and the reasons you hold them, regularly and in person. You won’t regret it.

Reason is just a process, a method. It should remain unaffected. The hard part, I agree, will be identifying reliable facts to reason about, with, from. Maybe that was a flaw in science that is finally being revealed: it relies on a very special class of "real" objects that will turn out to have been historically conditional, existing only before the great age of simulation.
