To the work Sri Aurobindo initiated The Mother gave a concrete form

Re: [TheBecoming] Re: Video: Debate on Identity with Indian American Youth (WAVES) Posted By: Sandeep Joshi Sat Jan 5, 2013 > Gulati: Peter Heehs raised a considerable controversy within the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and outside, with his thesis that Sri Aurobindo was not a Hindu.
The solution to this debate might be to separate Hinduism into spiritual and cultural aspects. Then we can state that Sri Aurobindo was spiritually Hindu but culturally indifferent, just as some Indians are culturally Hindu but spiritually ignorant (or atheists or Marxist...).

1) No institution that today carries or attaches to itself the name of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother should be automatically assumed to represent their direct will in all its operations. In the absence of direct guidance from their founders all organizations are prone to go their own way as they think fit and err in the finite wisdom, and in certain cases the infinite stupidity, of their all too human leadership. The attempt to decrypt the occult vision and will of the original founders, in this case Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, by extrapolating from the casual and meandering e-mails of a few individuals or even the policies and procedures of independent institutions functioning in their Name would almost surely end up in misconceptions and wrong notions, at times of the most exaggerated sort.
2) The sheer scope and scale of the life and work of the Mother demands a careful and circumspect assessment to even approach her reality. Viewed simply in its ordinary human dimensions the Mother's life gives the impression of an uninterrupted sacrifice, a living yagna, dedicated to Sri Aurobindo and to all that his birth and life represent. To the work he initiated she gave a concrete form and a growing life in the world, and through it she has brought to countless fortunate souls the touch, the brahma-sparsha, of Sri Aurobindo and her own deep, unconditional and nurturing love.

The Need for Humility : An Indispensable Quality from At the Feet of The Mother a talk by Alok Pandey Tuesday, 5th February 2013 at Hall of Harmony, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, India.
The Divine Action upon the world is not easily understood by humanity. The pressure of the Divine Force is received poorly because we are often shut up in the small glass case of the ego. We have our preferences, attachments, opinions about everything leaving little scope for the Divine to act or if He does so, to be understood. No wonder the forces that are ever active to disrupt the pilgrim use this pride and arrogance of man to cause his downfall. The one safety against the attack of these forces hostile to Yoga is Humility. The other helpful qualities are sincerity and vigilance. The following talk is based on the need of this indispensable quality called Humility.

He was passionate about the source of Hinduism as revealed in his major opus cited above. His aim was to reveal its psycho-spiritual ‘secret’ in the effort to restore that ‘soul of knowledge’ in those new foundations of Hinduism which Swami Vivekananda had foreseen.
I have followed Sri Aurobindo’s lead, not because of any ‘Aurobindonian orthodoxy’ which has been rearing its stifling head of late, but because my own yoga drew me along the very same path until I returned to the same source (The New Way, Vol. 2)' Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet, 'The Choice of Cosmic Truth or Superstition'

Sri Aurobindo did not write poetry to pass time on a Sunday afternoon. His works are the creations of a master poet who expects his readers to know the background of what he is saying. This again becomes a common stumbling block. Even if a person had the inclination to read a sonnet or a long narrative poem, he would still find it hard to understand not only the vocabulary but also the allusions and references to Greek or Indian mythology, which often form a backdrop to Sri Aurobindo’s poems. These literary and cultural references were once common knowledge to the educated person but do not generally form part of the intellectual development of modern man.
In other words, one needs a certain amount of preparation about the context before one can take pleasure in reading some of the poems. And that preparation must also include a familiarity with his yoga in order to grasp the meaning of many of his later poems, including most of the sonnets. The most fascinating thing about these poems is that they were written not only in different places but also during the various phases of a life that changed dramatically through the decades… Perhaps our knowledge of Sri Aurobindo the philosopher may remain incomplete without our knowledge of Sri Aurobindo the poet. ‘Love & Death’, 4:42 PM, 11:08 AM Friday, July 11, 2008

Sri Aurobindo’s writings abound in allusions, and Savitri is no exception. Indeed Sri Aurobindo has made lavish use of this poetic tool to enrich the suggestiveness of his word-music and images. We find echoes of the Vedas, Upanishads, Gita and Puranas – but also of Greek and roman mythology, of the Bible, and of lines or phrases from English literature, and from Virgil, Dante, Homer and other great poets. 5:36 PM Wednesday, July 30, 2008

It's exactly like pulling open a curtain: everything is waiting there behind. It's difficult for me to speak during these experiences because French comes to me more spontaneously, and the experiences all happen in English—Sri Aurobindo's power is so much with them... .

The phrase “original Gods” must be understood in the context of the embodied Nothingness, one with whom Savitri is going to have a life-and-death settling debate. She must grapple the problem; she must meet head-on this being who has sprung up from the Absolute’s mysterious Void, a paradoxical Void packed with every opposite of his. The formless Cause, that has given rise to that mighty embodied Nothingness, must be discovered and that Nothingness transformed into the Being of luminous creative Delight.
Savitri’s path for immortality upon earth passes through such a strange puzzling and inexplicable Void, a path which can open out only with the death of Satyavan. Who in this creation has reached the Supreme passing through the all-negating Void? None; therefore Death has remained unconquered. Savitri is now set to do it. If this is her way, and it seems that is the only way, to do God’s work in the field of the utter Nothing, then the imperative of Satyavan’s death becomes perfectly understandable, rational, necessary, inevitable.
Even the Supramental or Transcendental Gods are only the truth-ful and luminous Functionaries, high-stationed and majestic, imperial, each holding some specific office, all in harmony with each other, working in the Truth and Light and Consciousness and Joy of the great creative Urge. When the spiritual gifts of the divine Dawn, appearing repeatedly, pile up there is a possibility of the birth and growth of all the Gods in us. Among them the four great shining Kings are Varuna, Mitra, Bhaga, Aryaman … cast the glory and protection of their divine gaze.

‘Swami Vivekananda and the Making of Modern India
Swami Vivekananda was one of the earliest to emphasize the point that our material lives became more meaningful only when spiritualized. Above all, he inspired his countrymen, and by extension, all oppressed people in the world, to relocate faith and vitality in themselves. He exhorted men and women to more fully realize their potentialities as individual human beings; at the same time though, he encouraged them to be more compassionate and socially responsible.
Even though Swami Vivekananda rejected political praxis and West inspired reform, his message constitutes an integral part of Indian self-awakening. The overarching mission in his life was empowerment of the people: through education, collective thought and action and realizing the underlying unity of all human existence. ‘Man-making’ was Vivekananda’s vital agenda.

Purpose 2012 — The Annual Youth Camp, Hanamkonda Dec 6–9, 2012  Champak Hills, Jangaon, Hanamkonda, Andhra Pradesh
AURO YUVA, the youth wing of Sri Aurobindo Society, Hanamkonda, organized the annual youth camp—PURPOSE 2012—at Champak Hills, Jangaon, from 6th to 9th December 2012. The camp was supported by Matridarshan Trust, Champak Hills, Jangaon. This year, 44 boys from Warangal in the age group of 18–25 participated in the camp, while Sri Raghav Rao, Managing Trustee, Matridarshan Trust, Sri C. A. V. Ravi, Sri Shanthi Swaroop, Sri Venkataramana, Sri Ramu Sowmithri and a team of 11 volunteers coordinated the entire camp.

Arya samaj was the first socio-cultural hindu organisation that took up the task of addressing the challenges before hindu society with a well organized modern approach. Samaj was involved in social reform, education, service activities and reconversion to vedic religion.
The inspiration for samaj was to reform hindu religion and follow vedic way of life, apart from that samaj did commendable work in spreading education among masses…
Arya Samaj had a vibrant intellectual culture of debate, though at times it had caused ideological divisions. It’s important to discuss and differ than to stagnate, new vital currents of thought and action could emerge from such debates.
Arya samaj had enriched the spiritual, social, intellectual, cultural, and political life of hindu society, from its spring of inspiration emerged many personalities who made their mark on Indian society including its struggle for national independence.

Obsessively studying Sri Aurobindo and The Mother

This article on past incarnations reminds me of another point I need to add to the “Practising Yoga without a Guru” article, which is that after the passing of a Guru, people spend inordinate amounts of time in reminiscing who they actually were, how great they were and all the work they did.
The Guru says “live in the present” but people get stuck in that past moment, recalling adoringly how he said those words and what happened after that. This is nostalgia. We ought to be studying ourselves (becoming more self-aware) rather than obsessively studying Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. [Just added a new section to the "Practising Yoga without a Guru" article on this topic"]

My earlier experiments and search for a deeper, wider and more relevant education led me to explore Integral Education, inspired by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Integral Education is an education that seeks to transform the entire being — the body, heart, and head while seeping into the deeper layers of the inner being. An education that is not a mere rat race or a vanity appeaser, an education where the child is not a mere ‘product’, an education that lets a child be a child. 1:32 PM

Complaints of Mrinalini pointless since Sri Aurobindo is no longer himself

Swamy Dayananda – The Lion Saint by @krishnarjun108 Posted on November 27, 2012
Dayananda induced much needed shock treatment to hindu society. It was at its lowest ebb, obsessed with empty rituals, mindless sectarianism, casteism and superstition with an ostrich like approach to internal and external siege from enemies of its existence… Christian missionaries were targeting weakest links in hindu society and luring young minds in a systematic manner exploiting internal contradictions of hindus. Traditional hindu intellectual class was unable to cope up with the situation, time demanded an unconventional and radical approach to prevent society from dipping into self-hate.
Dayananda initiated much needed self-introspection in hindu society, reminded hindus of their vedic roots, highlighted the vedic core of hindu dharma with a rational approach. He also reminded hindus that knowledge, not dogma was the source of their path. He prompted hindus to return to basics, be rational and engage in the world with confidence. He was a critic of maya philosophy. The world to him is as real as a slap on the face.

Women embrace their responsibilities—rather than escape

RY Deshpande permalink One example of that horrifying frightful history is the cruel cold-blooded holocaust, a hell-fire let loose into the world of life and civilisation. Sri Aurobindo himself had said that, Hitler’s success would have meant putting the clock of human civilisation back by fifty thousand years. That would have been dreadfully calamitous. This had to be halted. The most difficult and painful occult work the Mother and Sri Aurobindo had done to halt it is the real story of World War Two.
The Mother impersonated the Power who was guiding Hitler and ‘deceived’ Hitler to take a wrong step, telling him to invade Russia. That was virtually the end of the War.

From: Rajiv Malhotra Date: Thu, Nov 22, 2012 Subject: interpretation of involution/evolution
Unmesha and nimesha are the terms used to describe involution and evolution. I need an expert interpretation of the text in this regard. This concept is the very foundation of Ken Wilber's claim to originality in his Integral Theory. He got this from Sri Aurobindo but denies it. I discovered that Sri Aurobindo got it from Swami Vivekananda who elaborates this principle many times. But some Westerners respond that even prior to Vivekananda, there were vague references to this idea in some European writings. Now I discover that these Europeans were Indologists who had probably picked it from Sanskrit texts.

What is the characteristic of the true faith required in a spiritual aspirant?  It is a combination of faith and doubt… people’s personalities are constituted differently and each one evolves in his own time by the truth of his own nature.  What seems evidently true to one person at one point in time may not make sense to another… In the spiritual path, mental rules are to be shed as much as possible and actions must be guided by an awakening intuition.   Actions which elevate the consciousness, which enable the mind to rise above the senses are undertaken without regard to tradition… The spiritual approach to reading holy books calls for a fine blend of critical thinking and interpretive insight… The goal in the spiritual path is to rediscover the truth for oneself and not get stuck in the words of past Prophets…  The spiritual approach to such confusions is to neither believe nor disbelieve the problematic assertions in question but to lay them on the side for later resolution… The spiritual path is propelled by the desire to rediscover the Truth for oneself by using some psychological and occult practices.

The touch of a woman DNA: Tuesday, Mar 7, 2006 By Deepti Priya Mehrotra
Women’s spirituality is seldom the kind that turns away from the world. Rather, many women recognise spirituality as best expressed when deeply engaged with the relationships, values and emotions. They tend to embrace their responsibilities—rather than escape. So, ordinary women often exhibit extraordinary strength. They refuse to abandon children—or the aged and the ailing—to set out in search of personal gains, or enlightenment. In so doing, women seem to thrive. They understand that nurturing life is harmonious with nurturing their own spirituality.
Do women remain intuitive and empathetic after entering the modern workplace? Girls and boys are born with similar potential. But society tends to teach boys to deny their softer emotions making them vulnerable. Girls are trained to see life’s worth in revolving it around other people. But increasingly, women are rebelling against the concept of sacrificing self for others.
They want to change aggressive practices—rather than accept, submit or get absorbed. Women are pursuing the right to develop their own identities— through education, career and creativity. Some of the changes they are making at the workplace are obvious—more colour, exchange of personal stories, greater sensitivity. Deeper shifts include: commitment to causes beyond career, and a propensity for cooperation rather than competition. There may be more tuning to the needs of the group as a whole, rather than to just oneself.
The world needs a ‘woman’s touch’ more than ever before. Women are taking the lead in opposing wars. They are questioning the injustice of poverty, and of skewed development. They are at the forefront of struggles to save the earth, and to protect children from disease and death. For they know the pain of suffering in flesh, and the great blessing of human contentment when human needs are fulfilled. They know that flesh and spirit are intimately connected—that spirit is immanent in the flesh.

Happy harmony of Vedic vision and Evolution

Hitch your wagon to evolution by Tusar N. Mohapatra
Periodical elections keep the engines of news industry moving which provides a form of entertainment as well as a sense of participation to large sections of people. So much so that local issues are often overshadowed by ideological dichotomies operating at the national level. Anna Hazare and Kejriwal are apt examples of how Jantar Mantar can turn someone a national figure within a short span of time. But the sorry spectacle of splintering of the erstwhile Team Anna is due to lack of a coherent intention or direction.
Against this backdrop, the work of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo in repackaging the civilizational perspective of India for a wider global application procures prominence. Although many of their pet themes such as popularization of Sanskrit and inculcating poetic sensibility are patently impractical at present, some key ideas like the East-West integration or Free-Progress system of education, nevertheless, are doable propositions. Further, their endeavor of embedding all pursuit of excellence within the overall trajectory of evolution echoing the Vedic quest for light and immortality imparts meaning and profundity to ordinary human wants and action.
This is where spirituality supersedes morality. Morality is surely a force and a chief ingredient of our social capital but has uncertain effectiveness and a high rate of mortality. The spiritual path of hitching the wagon to evolution, on the contrary, is a more dependable and enduring method of ensuring honesty and creating a largely ethical environment. The Science of Living enunciated by The Mother is a potent formulation involving depth psychology that awakens the spiritual dimension in our day to day lives. This shows why and how right pedagogy should find adequate space within the realm of power struggle and politics. [TNM55] Posted by Tusar N. Fighting colonialism as well as resisting revivalism was twin challenges before Sri Aurobindo as a writer a century ago. Conscious of his task of fashioning a synthesis, he handled his wide ranging subjects with utmost sympathy. In his commentaries on ancient Indian texts, his fidelity is matched by the profundity he furnishes. Not averse towards modern science and philosophy, he accomplishes a happy harmony of Vedic vision and Evolution.
The Mother & Sri Aurobindo stand for universality. The present political situation in India – howsoever fragmented it may be – can’t afford to evince as provincial or parochial. Neither the Nehruvian nor the Hindutva worldview can be counted as appropriate for India at the moment. Rather, the 1947 Five-Dreams broadcast should be considered as the right saviour. Sociological interrogation of the legacy of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo is definitely an urgency. 1914, 1926, 1956, and 1968 have engendered a plethora of prescriptions with conflicting and confusing signals that are surely burdensome for any individual. Further, surviving institutions are certainly not in the shape that the Masters would have liked them to be for piloting a predominantly collective yoga. And hence, any lifestyle paradigm receiving tacit endorsement may be suspect. One safe guiding principle, however, is that the past and its methods can never be the final touchstone for the pathways of the future. [TNM55] Posted by Tusar N. When it comes to The Mother & Sri Aurobindo and Integral Yoga, one feels like Condoleezza Rice remarking “The fact of the matter is I've been black all my life. Nobody needs to tell me how to be black.[125]” Like Socrates’ "examined life,” The Mother’s stress on avoiding the misery of an “aimless life” is perhaps the most basic rule for an aspirant. For a major stretch in life, however, many mistake earning livelihood for the aim although the profession provides the opportunity for flowering of talent, nurturing creativity, and moulding of subjectivity. The resultant individuality, identity, and social mobility, however, do exert a mesmerizing effect whereby the chance of coming face to face with choosing an aim or confronting one’s own real self head on is always deferred. Drawing satisfaction from some substitute as compensation is, of course, forced by subsistence compulsions.
Traditional canons of conduct conveniently contain predominantly direct correspondence between ethical life and action and liberation. But non-linear Integral Yoga Ontology and its spiral evolution paradigm is more prone to post-modernist rapprochement with tentativeness, contingency, and uncertainty of interpretation. This is no logic to condone misconduct (for, the elephant is Brahman and so is the mahut) but the paramountcy of context is never emphasized more elsewhere. The tenet, All life is Yoga, therefore, assumes unprecedented significance against this backdrop. Like the Shatadala or a Sahasra-bahu (called Saas-bahu erroneously in colloquial fashion) temple, the interdependence, interconnection, and economy within a collectivity is thrown into sharp relief. Integral Yoga, thus, is no uniform potion; but rather an arena for experimenting with life along the known tracks and with notions yet unpracticed. [TNM55] Posted by Tusar N. It’s not without significance that Sri Aurobindo Ashram came into being in 1926 in the wake of Swarajya Party in 1923 and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Communist Party of India in 1925. Despite all disclaimers, establishment of a commune is a palpable political act by which the inmates, not only stay insulated against unwanted ideological propaganda, but also become example of lived values thereby offering an alternative socio-cultural paradigm. But as we observe at the end of 2012, none of the aforesaid four streams inspire confidence so far as the future of humanity is concerned.
Technological breakthrough has brought about quantum leap in integrating thinking all over the globe but opinions remain as opposed as ever. The Mother & Sri Aurobindo, however, have asked for vigilant, constant, and unceasing aspiration for ushering inunity, mutuality, and harmony. [TNM55] Posted by Tusar N. The Mother’s proclamation of the descent of the Supramental in 1956 almost coincided with the sweeping post-Independence hopes of building a new India. But what we observe 56 years later is not a very encouraging scene on both the fronts. Despite the democratic pretensions, politics, media, education, and leisure are all hostage to a pervasive feudal culture. Instead of the Marxist angst and alienation, a celebratory engrossing with Heideggerian inauthenticity and trivia seems to be the order of the day. Commerce, of course, propels excellence as well as quality of life. Patronage for arts and creativity, too, are hinged to the invisible hand of market dynamics. Management of human affairs has climbed such macro levels that ordinary human beings have become inconsequential.
Large scale money making through arms, drugs, vaccines, and trafficking etc. also have turned sophisticated avenues that employ cutthroat liaisoning and spying. Both Corporates and Governments are succumbing to such underworld machinations not to speak of non-State terror and arm-twisting. Even, many respectable ecological campaigns hide behind them murky tales of cooked up economics. Bioethical issues are compounding with the march of technology and media. So, coping up compulsions is perhaps driving people to cheap forms of entertainment and arenas of religious dumbing down. To sense something noble and inspiring within this cacophony, therefore, has surely become a self deluding task. But The Mother & Sri Aurobindo stay as the only fount of light and hope midst such oppressive despair. [TNM55] Posted by Tusar N. Heehs has made the word “hagiography” famous through his debut in national TV. So, the general assumption is that what is “non-hagiographic” is true, or at least, rational and credible. And if the writer happens to hail from the West, then he must be the most astute and exact while the rest have “vested interests.”
In four long years, we don’t find even four persons among the civil society to have read the book to judge it independently. Writing a review and committing oneself to a distinct view, of course, requires motivation as well as courage. But even then, many are likely to miss the bone of contention that it’s all about what Heehs has not explicitly written in the book. [TNM55] Posted by Tusar N. The firmness with which Sri Aurobindo refutes Nietzsche’s playful affirmation is a milestone in the history of human thought. For long, philosophy has been hostage to a science fiction style of writing or abstract painting. Happily, fatigue has set in and that epoch is fast coming to a close. Further, defending Marx, which was considered pivotal to theory, is no longer that sacrosanct. These are welcome developments but without Sri Aurobindo a satisfying ontological framework is difficult to put together. [TNM55]  Posted by Tusar N. The Life Divine commenced on July 18, 1912 and hence it’s the Centenary year, in a way. The book has not been sufficiently combed by competent analysts and commentators as yet as it should have been but the ontological ground it defends against sophisticated harking back to dominant and fashionable strands of philosophy is priceless. To that extent, it’s tantamount to a political testament as well. This splendid isolation explains the allergy of the Hindutva brigade for Sri Aurobindo and matching impatience of the Leftists for him.
The West, too, is envious of his magnum opus and strives to ignore and eclipse it. Academicians feel safe by labeling it under religion out of lethargy. Thinking theologians of all hues are jealous of the coherence of its content but fear its hegemony. But the synthetic cosmology that The Life Divine sets forth is a sure guide for unification of mankind and congealing harmony. [TNM55]     Posted by Tusar N. Sri Aurobindo’s name underwent many metamorphoses during his lifetime. From stark anonymity to a slew of pseudonyms and acronyms, his experimentation ended with his signing as Sri Aurobindo sans any surname or caste identity. His works, understandably, have been published under that name and, ordinarily, he is referred to as so. But there are certain types of people who are intolerant of his adding Sri to his name and are always eager to geld it. The Sri to them is a canopy of fundamentalism that smacks of unjustified superiority, thus threatening secular sensibilities.
The fact is that no one can help in this matter as Sri Aurobindo is no more and can’t be questioned as to why he wanted to retain his name this way. So, the minimum one can do is not to distort his name by eclipsing Sri. In book indexes too he should appear under the alphabet S and not A or G as Sri is not an honorific here but an integral part of his name. Sri Aurobindo is yet to receive the prestige he deserves as a poet and a thinker and hence the need to resist the snatching away of his Sri. [TNM55]  Posted by Tusar N. The methodological quandary has been a constant companion of man since millennia and no possible remedy for it is in sight. Despite their exhaustive writings, The Mother & Sri Aurobindo – let’s face it – have not left behind some firm opinion on any specific topic. So, one must be extremely circumspect while recommending a slice of their prescriptions or endorsing its splice with some other formulation.
Internet has greatly facilitated availability of texts, but just because something is written, it can’t be taken at its face value. The content, by itself, is no assurance of truth or commensurate performance. Religious texts have existed for thousands of years but what we find in the society at present is sham and scams. Yoga or spirituality, if ineffective to refine the collective life, then will be accused of collusion or escapism. Heehs imbroglio has been instrumental in spreading the fragrance of Sadhana in Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Puducherry from Columbia to Cambodia. It’s shameful that Dr. Karan Singh remains the Chairman of Auroville Governing Board for next four years. [TNM55] Posted by Tusar N. A great day as the focus is on Sri Aurobindo by influential right wing. We agree with Gaurav’s criteria barring the last point in which he sidetracks web based offerings. As one who has been at the receiving end of many rebuffs for urging people to take the socio-political philosophy of Sri Aurobindo seriously, the web is a great empowering tool with vast potentiality of making minds meet. Street politics may be the flavour of the season, but ultimately it's words and opinions which will matter. Savitri Era Party looks forward to the day of such enlightened politics being ushered in. For a couple of years, Blogs were a rage and hence followed multi-pronged flurry at sabotage. FacebookTwitterLinkedIn, and sundry social media and networking ventures cropped up to compete. Most mainstream publications also renamed their features as Blogs. The individual voice was drowned amid the surfeit of sites mechanically reproducing news and sales props. However, the utility of Blogs will ensure their longevity albeit with dwindled popularity.
Another threat is disproportionate flood of videos and photographs which devalue the reading material. Overemphasizing graphics and designing too seduces the eyes elsewhere. Modified version for mobiles or tablets robs the Blogs of their unique charm and some outreach arms. Country-based URL is a prelude to restricted circulation and diminished distribution. But the lure of freedom and free publishing will continue to draw new entrants to etch their speech for future generations. [TNM55]   Posted by Tusar N.
