There's a strategy to make people with low self-esteem pay high prices to buy a product they don't really need except to prove to themselves and similar folks that they have arrived. 

Yeah right. When the product is a puff job, you know there is a naive emptiness around that pride ;-)

Not all brands that claim themselves to be premium are premium. That's the whole point. There's a difference between quality and brand. Some brands pretend to be status, but are effectively psycho-products (AmEx cards), some are fantastic quality offerings (Mercedes). There's academic research available on everything, which big boys and girls study ;-)

If someone buys a product to prove they have arrived, that implies they believe they have genuinely achieved something worth celebrating. That is closer to pride and accomplishment than low self-esteem.
