This chapter explores modernity as individual and collective emancipation. Western Protestantism (in different garbs) may have globally instilled a pronounced mentality of individual choice and collective emancipation. Protestantism seems to equal modernity, if we follow the Weberian idea of the latter to its logical conclusion. As a tool it is helpful to understand the emergence of what we may term Hindu modernity. This term is very broad and within the context of nineteenth century colonial India refers to an extremely influential innovation begun by Raja Rammohun Roy (1772–1833). In Rammohun’s writings and socio-religious activism we can trace the relative validity of the modernity thesis on Protestantism also for ‘reformed and innovated’ Hinduism.
