Why do I say this? Because the first steps, when you begin to take a stand, are the hardest. Especially for someone like me, who was a ‘secular academic’, quite steeped in the conventional discourse and academic practices. These excluded any Hindu position, whether overt or covert.
To cross these boundaries and to speak out from a position of total erasure was the most difficult. Then gradually, it became easier, almost like second nature. And the politics of being Hindu was no longer something that one detached from one’s deepest spiritual practices.
From being Hindu to becoming Hindu is, thus, an ideological and political process.

‘Dadabhai Naoroji is a radical among radicals’
(Context for passage: Tensions between the so-called Extremist and Moderate wings of the Indian National Congress have come to a head)
By 1906, Aurobindo (Ghose) was editor of a fiery journal called Bande Mataram, and in his opinion, the credit for Indianizing the Congress went entirely to Tilak. His proposal for Tilak as Congress president was endorsed by several provincial party committees, and the Moderates got worried the party was likely to slip out of their hands. Their counter-move was to propose Dadabhai Naoroji’s name for president. Though Naoroji was 81 at the time, respect for him went across, and beyond, categories such as Extremist and Moderate. His choice itself showed the Moderates’ sharp awareness that their position was tenuous.
A few years earlier, when Tilak had called for a more assertive Congress, the Moderates had got Naoroji to write to him to desist from taking a hard line. This time again, through Naoroji, they sought to stay Tilak’s hand. And albeit desperately, they succeeded. Tilak himself had suggested the name of Lala Lajpat Rai for the post of president and had remarked that the Congress needed to be told precisely what Bhima had said to his elder brother, Yudhistira, at a key moment in the Mahabharata: ‘Give up your attitude of supplication and demonstrate the character of a Kshatriya.’
With Dadabhai’s name coming forward, though, he withdrew, and stated ten days before the start of the session that ‘Dadabhai can have only one message to give to India – that of Swaraj’ and went on to insist that ‘Dadabhai is a radical among radicals’. Naoroji’s views had truly become more radical than earlier, and he said in his closing address at the Congress session that what India was asking for could be spelled out ‘in one word, self-government or Swaraj, like that of the United Kingdom or the colonies’. #DadabhaiNaoroji #India #History @PenguinIndia @PenguinBooks @penguinrandom
