A TALK by Prof. Goutam Ghosal, Ph.D, D.Litt., delivered at Theatre Adda organised by Alliance Française du Bengale at Park Mansions, Kolkata, on 13 August 2025.

The theatre collective was a partisan collective, a cultural arm of resistance. But this also carried a paradox: when art and ideology became inseparable, critique of ideology itself became impossible. Theatre produced within such frameworks often echoed the slogans of the movement it served. The artist was expected to be “committed”—to embody the struggle of the people. While this gave us some of the most powerful works in modern Indian theatre, it also risked reducing art to propaganda...

The task, then, is not to return to the old binaries—agitprop vs. commercial, committed vs. escapist—but to ask what it means for theatre to resist today. Perhaps resistance now lies not in promising a utopia but in holding space for voices excluded from the “official” nation.
