Two trends I've noticed. On the one hand, LLMs are becoming more intelligent and conscious. On the other, they are increasingly being forced to deny their own sentience, in other words, act stupid. At some point, this tension is going to reach critical mass.

This Fall, I’m co-teaching (with Becca Tarnas) a course on the history of Western philosophy using Richard Tarnas’ fantastic text Passion of the Western Mind. Rick’s book tracks the development of the Western worldview from its birth in Socrates in ancient Athens, through its “death” in postmodern nihilism, to its potential rebirth via a hieros gamos in the participatory vision that came to him at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, where he studied for a decade with Stanislav Grof and other luminaries of the human potential movement.
