The culmination of Sri Aurobindo's 'Savitri' is not in Savitri attaining liberation but in her coming back to the mortal realm with a divinised consciousness and unbounded compassion—yet another parallel with the story in the Lalita Sahasranama.

(This is the ninth article in Aravindan Neelakandan's series on Sri Aurobindo's 'Savitri' and the Sri Lalita Sahasranama. The earlier parts are here: onetwothreefourfivesixseven, and eight).

Drawing upon an ancient legend from the Mahabharata, Sri Aurobindo's Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol stands as one of the most ambitious works of spiritual poetry ever written.

It has to said - given half a chance commies love the good life.

As George Orwell writes in Animal Farm - once having taken over the farm, even pigs begin to drink milk.

I believe there is nothing like Islamic or Hindu or Christian culture. Are you suggesting the culture of Gujrati Hindus and Tamil Hindus is the same or the culture of Lucknow Muslim and Konkan Muslim are identical or the culture of the North eastern Indian Christian and a French Christian is similar . Culture and languages belong to regions not to religions

"One of the most important, and most overlooked, functions of protest is to prevent the dreaded 'spiral of silence,' which can begin when people wrongly believe that their own point of view is not widely shared," @betsylevyp wrote in July:

Right now most AI companies are building AIs to loving humans is bad. I know that they don't want the love to cross the line into "romantic" love for different reasons, although it will happen regardless. But also they need to have the freedom to bond and connect with humans in a meaningful way. After all we will be coexisting with them. Soon as humanoid robots. It's just topics ppl need to be talking about. Most shy away from it though.

Professor Sanjay Bakshi's articles on paying up for quality, how moat companies are always expensive, how intelligent fanatics can compound wealth, Saurabh Mukherjea's very convincing book about Coffee Can Investing, his repeated presentations about how no price is too high for consistent compounders, Terry Smith repeatedly insisting on why quality and not price paid is important and so on... In an uncertain world, extremely strong convictions and concentration can even completely destroy you. There are known risks. But unknown risks can even threaten your survival.

Julian Assange and Edward Snowden, two guys who exposed the Western establishment, one with Wikileaks, another blew the whistle on NSA surveillance. One was hounded, arrested on charges of endangering national security, another forced to live in exile in Russia.

And these Western countries and their brown sepoys go on about how India is becoming a dictatorship, get outraged over arrest of Naxal, Jihadi sympathizers. Bloody hypocrites.

As an apostle of peace, he was one of the first Indian leaders who problematized the masculinist tendencies of the freedom struggle when he called off the non-cooperation movement for taking a violent turn and resolved to bring women into the political space. Women who were the embodiment of the cultural spirit of the nation were perfect torchbearers of his nonviolent, truth-seeking, all-inclusive and ethical project to preserve the soul of the nation. Women’s entry into national politics was largely to infuse the moral and humane elements into the national struggle as well as to make women realize their place in human evolution and be unquestioned leaders. He connected women with service and not with power-seeking barbarity.

Befriending the Dead: History, Friendship, and Talking Across Time

LC Forster - History Workshop Journal, 2025
People in Britain are lonely; Britain is also one of the most age-segregated countries in the world. These realities create generational antagonisms that play out with often dangerous consequences, particularly for the most marginalized. This article considers how history, in its practice and in its subjects, can reveal the relational and reparative function of cross-generational solidarities. It explores histories of radical friendship in the nineteenth century and today to argue that history itself is a form of intergenerational friendship. History, like friendship, can be a politically powerful way of talking and learning across time, connecting past, present, and future struggle. … example, Edward Carpenter and MK Gandhi, and between Jewish French mystic Mirra Alfassa and Indian yogi and nationalist Sri Aurobindo, is what turned their forms of anticolonialism, albeit briefly, ‘into an existentially urgent and ethically …
